My Best Friend’s Closet is a program to provide clothing and accessories to teenage girls from low income homes. It also provides extremely valuable leadership opportunities for young women in the community who can volunteer with the program and act as peers. Gilat founded My Best Friend’s Closet in 2010 and was the first designer consignment boutique in Highland Park IL. It was founded on the belief that shopping can be fun, even in a damaged economy. Everyone still wants nice things, and you can find them at My Best Friend’s Closet. They carry trendy designer women’s clothing and accessories straight from the most stylish women in the area.
There are a few criteria one must meet for the program. Participants can be referred by community agencies, pre-employment programs, or even educational institutions. Girls may also self refer if they meet all the criteria. Each participant is limited to 2 visits, so it is important to ensure the person you’re referring hasn’t already visited My Best Friend’s Closet. Finally, participants must be between the age of 12 and 18, and must be experiencing financial barriers.
Many people visit My Best Friend’s Closet to donate clothes and accessories to underprivileged girls. The people who bring in clothes receive money for their “donations”, and it is the perfect place to take clothing that you hardly ever wear. They accept many types of clothes, though the most common is those “fancy” designer clothes favored by stylish women.
